Secrets of Veerasana

Hero or Thinking Philοsopher’s Pose

Veerasana, also known as the Hero or Thinking Philοsopher’s Pose, is uncomplicated and simple, but it has its benefits.  Firstly, it helps to think better and clearer by increasing concentration. It is also good for calming down and reducing the flow of thoughts. Thirdly, it stimulates the kidneys, liver, reproductive and abdominal organs. A prolonged stay (at least a few minutes with your eyes closed) turns you inward and provides physical and mental relaxation.

The body is motionless and the eyes can be closed. We breathe slowly until the flow of energy synchronises with the breath. We concentrate on the area between and just above the eyebrows (bhrumadhya) and can breathe through this center.

If it is comfortable, you can try sitting on the heel (the heel is in the perineum area), that will stimulate Muladhara chakra.

The second variation is a balancing one: as you inhale, stand up, lifting your body off the floor and using your hands to help you to stand and level. The focus here is on balance and stability. This variation puts a strain on the knees, so if you have knee pain and or arthritis, do not overdo it. This asana calms the nervous system and is one of the first to help, which helps develop the ability to create balance.
